The best LMSW exam study guides for 2026, compared

A home study setup on an oak kitchen table: an open notebook with blank pages and a pen, two plain hardback books in green and brown, a closed laptop, a mug of coffee, reading glasses and a sprig of eucalyptus beside a sunny window with a mustard curtain

The best LMSW exam study guide for 2026 is one written to the Masters exam outline ASWB has used since August 3, 2026, which raised ethics from a quarter of the exam to more than a third. Of the LMSW study guides we could check on their publishers' own pages on October 28, 2026, two say they follow that outline: Springer's fifth edition of Dawn Apgar's Social Work Licensing Masters Exam Guide ($129.99 in print or digital) and our own Masters study guide ($9.99 as a PDF and EPUB). If you would rather listen than read, Therapist Development Center's LMSW course also says it has been fully updated for the new exam. Whatever you pick, finish with ASWB's own practice test, the only one made from retired exam questions.

We publish one of these guides. Everything said here about the others comes from their sellers' own pages, read on October 28, 2026, and the section on ours includes what it lacks.

Why the edition of an LMSW study guide matters in 2026

The outline behind the Masters exam changed completely in August 2026. ASWB folded four content areas into three, and the ethics area grew from 25% of the exam to 35%:

2018 Masters outlineWeight2026 Masters outlineWeight
Human Development, Diversity, and Behavior in the Environment27%Values and Ethics35%
Assessment and Intervention Planning24%Assessment and Planning33%
Interventions with Clients/Client Systems24%Intervention and Practice32%
Professional Relationships, Values, and Ethics25%

The material on development and behavior did not disappear. Most of it now sits inside Assessment and Planning, and diversity and social justice moved into Values and Ethics. What changed is where each statement lives, how much the exam weights it, and the wording of many of them. A guide organized around the 2018 outline teaches in the wrong proportions for the exam you will sit. Our side-by-side of the two outlines traces each move.

The quickest check on any LMSW book is its table of contents. Parts called "Assessment and Intervention Planning", "Interventions with Clients/Client Systems" or "Professional Relationships, Values, and Ethics" belong to the 2018 outline. Values and Ethics, Assessment and Planning, and Intervention and Practice belong to the current one. Do not rely on the year on the cover: a "2025–2026" edition can easily predate August 2026.

Apgar's Social Work Licensing Masters Exam Guide, 5th edition

Springer has published Apgar's Masters guide through five editions, and the fifth is the first written for the new exam. Its page describes the book as "fully aligned with the 2026 ASWB Applied Knowledge Statements", with more than 500 exam-style questions, over 150 of them available only online, and two full-length practice tests. The paperback and the digital guide each cost $129.99; Springer lists the digital guide with live lessons on its platform.

The Masters guide has more add-ons than most: a 500-question QBank for $79.99, a separate 122-question practice test for $59.99, and an on-demand video course of more than 14 hours for $149.99. Springer discounts digital modules by 10% for two, 20% for three and 25% for all four, and says access continues for as long as you need it, subject to its terms of use. The set that pairs the guide with an additional printed practice test starts at $169.99 and comes to more than 650 questions and three full tests.

It suits a candidate who wants a printed book with a long track record and a matching set of digital tools from the same publisher. Budget $130 for the book alone and considerably more for the add-ons. Before buying, confirm the listing says fifth edition, the one Springer describes as aligned with the 2026 outline.

Our ASWB Masters study guide

Ours covers the Masters exam only, written to the 2026 outline with a lesson for each of its 109 applied knowledge statements. The lessons share one shape, so you always know where you are: why the topic matters in practice, the concepts built up, a worked exam-style question, what the exam tests, the wrong instincts that cost points, and a one-page summary. A practice set follows each lesson, with every option explained in the answers that come after it. In total that is 1,779 practice questions, as a PDF and an EPUB, for $9.99.

What it lacks: there is no teaching on video or audio, and the book has no timed full-length mock exam. The paperback edition carries 1,342 questions, because Amazon's page limit for that format forced a shorter set; the PDF and EPUB have all 1,779. The download is a final sale, so the free sample is a complete lesson: read the Masters sample, with all 21 of its questions, before you decide.

It suits a reader who wants the whole Masters syllabus in order, cheaply, and plans to add practice tests from elsewhere.

Therapist Development Center's LMSW course

TDC's product is a course rather than a book, built around audio. Its page describes more than 65 hours of content in online audio lectures with downloadable handouts, more than 600 practice exam questions with rationales, and a second full-length mock exam added in the update for the new ASWB exam. Licensed social workers answer questions by email, access starts as soon as you buy, and TDC says it grants free extensions as needed. It costs $275.

It suits a candidate who learns best by listening, or who wants a coach to email, and can study in long audio sessions.

LMSW practice tests: ASWB's own and Social Work Test Prep

ASWB's online practice test is built from questions previously used on the real exam, which no other product can offer. It costs $85, holds 122 questions, times you as the exam does, and stays open for 30 days so you can stop and return. You can buy it only after registering for the exam. It is most useful near the end, once you have studied.

Social Work Test Prep sells full-length practice exams for $39 each, or five for $144, with 90 days of access. It says every exam now uses the 122-question August 2026 format. Given the extra weight on ethics, its 75-question Ethics Booster, at $20, is worth a look for Masters candidates.

What about the self-published "LMSW Exam Prep 2025–2026" books?

Search for an LMSW exam prep book and you will find plenty of paperbacks and audiobooks with "2025–2026" or "2026–2027" in the title, from several publishers and many independent authors. We have not reviewed them one by one, so we will not rank them. Four checks will tell you most of what you need:

  1. Count the content areas. Three with the 2026 names, or four with the 2018 names listed above.
  2. Read the teaching as well as the questions. A preview of a few pages tells you whether the book explains or just lists.
  3. Look for full rationales. An explanation for each wrong option teaches you the next question; an answer letter does not.
  4. Check the publisher's own page for a plain statement of which outline the book follows. If it will not say, assume the older one.

What a 2026 LMSW study guide must cover

ASWB prints the full Masters outline in its free Examination Guidebook, August 2026 edition, with nine Masters sample questions and their rationales. In outline:

  • Values and Ethics, 35%: confidentiality and its limits, informed consent, boundaries and dual relationships, self-determination, mandatory reporting, documentation, billing, electronic practice, termination, ethics in supervision, and anti-oppressive practice and social justice.
  • Assessment and Planning, 33%: the biopsychosocial model, interviewing, the mental status exam, risk to self and others, trauma, substance use, abuse and neglect, family dynamics, development across the lifespan, motivation and readiness for change, and planning and choosing interventions.
  • Intervention and Practice, 32%: the helping relationship, evidence-based practices such as CBT and motivational interviewing, crisis intervention, case management, group work, family therapy models, advocacy, practice and program evaluation, research methods, and supervision.

If you trained for clinical work or have an LCSW guide on the shelf, note the differences. The Clinical outline adds diagnosis with the DSM, couples work, research ethics and fiscal management, none of which has its own statement on the Masters outline, while the Masters outline includes a statement on policies for a safe and inclusive workplace that the Clinical outline lacks. The weights differ too.

How to get the most out of an LMSW study guide

Owning a good guide is half the job. These habits do the other half:

  1. Find your gaps before you read. The Guidebook's study plan template asks you to rate each outline statement from 1 to 5. Do it for all 109, then start with the low scores rather than on page one.
  2. Give Values and Ethics the time its weight demands. At 35% it is the largest area, and the NASW Code of Ethics, which ASWB lists among its references, is free to read online. Read the standards themselves alongside a guide's summary of them.
  3. Answer each practice set the day you read its lesson, and write down which statements you got wrong. Patterns in that list are your revision plan.
  4. Study the explanations for the answers you rejected. Many Masters questions ask which action comes FIRST or NEXT, or which is BEST, and eight of ASWB's nine Masters samples carry a capitalized qualifier of that kind. The wrong options are usually sensible actions in the wrong order.
  5. Save full-length timed tests for the last third of your schedule. Use one to check your pace, then ASWB's practice test as a final rehearsal.

Which LMSW study guide should you buy?

  • A printed book with a large question bank and optional video from one publisher: Apgar's fifth edition, with add-ons as your budget allows.
  • The complete 2026 Masters syllabus to read, for the least money: our Masters guide at $9.99, after reading the free lesson.
  • Audio teaching with a coach on call: Therapist Development Center's course, at $275.
  • Timed practice when the content is already familiar: Social Work Test Prep's exams, then ASWB's practice test.
  • Before any of them: download the free Guidebook and rate yourself against the Masters outline.

Frequently asked questions

Is Apgar's LMSW exam guide updated for 2026?
The fifth edition is. Springer's page describes the Social Work Licensing Masters Exam Guide, fifth edition, as fully aligned with the 2026 ASWB Applied Knowledge Statements, with more than 500 questions and two full-length practice tests, at $129.99 in print or digital (checked October 28, 2026). If you buy a used or discounted copy, make sure it is the fifth edition.
Can I use an LCSW study guide for the LMSW exam?
Not as your main guide. The two outlines share most of their statements, but the Clinical outline adds statements on DSM-based diagnosis, couples work, research ethics and fiscal management that have no counterpart on the Masters outline, and the Masters outline has a statement on policies for a safe and inclusive workplace that the Clinical outline lacks. The weights differ as well: 35%, 33% and 32% for Masters against 36%, 32% and 32% for Clinical.
