• LBSWLicensed Bachelor Social Worker

  Requires the ASWB Bachelors exam.

  A CSWE-accredited bachelor’s degree and, in the rule’s older wording, “the basic level examination”.

• LMSWLicensed Master Social Worker

  Requires the ASWB Masters exam.

  An MSW or a doctorate in social work, and “the intermediate level examination”. A student in the final semester of an MSW may be authorized to sit before the transcript arrives, on a letter from the school.

• LISWLicensed Independent Social Worker

  Requires the ASWB Clinical exam.

  The clinical level examination, plus supervised clinical experience that cannot begin until you hold the LMSW: at least two years, at least 3,000 hours of practice, at least 1,500 of them direct client contact, and at least 110 hours of direct supervision — 24 of which must be live or recorded observation of you with a client, and no more than 50 of which may be group.

Worth knowing about Iowa

Iowa is one of the jurisdictions where “independent” means clinical: the LISW takes the Clinical examination, not Advanced Generalist, which is the opposite of what the same three letters mean in Minnesota or the District of Columbia. Check the state, not the acronym. Iowa also accepts California’s equivalent-level licensing examination in place of the ASWB one, which is worth knowing if you trained there.
