Social worker self-care principles

Ethical Principles and Responsibilities

The 2021 revision of the NASW Code of Ethics added self-care language to the Purpose section and to:

  1. AOption A. Correct answer. the ethical principle attached to the value of integrityCorrect
  2. BOption B. Incorrect answer. the standard on competence, which governs new areas of practice
  3. COption C. Incorrect answer. the standard on impairment, which governs personal difficulties

Why

The revision put self-care in two framing places: the Purpose section, and the ethical principle attached to integrity, which says social workers should take measures to care for themselves professionally and personally. B and C name real standards, and both are close neighbours — competence governs the work you take on, and the impairment standard governs what happens once personal difficulties affect your judgement or performance. Neither is where the self-care language landed, and neither requires self-care in itself. The placement is the point: this is stated as a professional expectation rather than as an enforceable rule.
